Peppermint!
by Samantha Johnson
Peppermint is just as much a part of the holidays as snow and eggnog!
Whether it be decorating with candy canes or enjoying that warm peppermint hot chocolate, this plant is sure to please. But did you know that it is more that just a sweet treat?
According to researchers at Harvard Medical School, Peppermint oil seems to be fairly effective at relieving irritable bowel syndrome. Studies proved that 75% of patients that took peppermint oil capsules for four weeks had a major reduction in their IBS symptoms, compared to 38% of those who took a placebo pill.
The oil that is extracted from the peppermint plant contains an abundant amount of Menthol, which is found in many over the counter products, including cough lozenges and muscle pain ointments. Menthol creates a soothing “cooling” sensation allowing for a brief relief or distraction from a cough or a muscle ache.
Peppermint can also ease stress and anxiety with its uplifting and refreshing properties. Try rubbing some peppermint oil or fresh peppermint leaves on your temples to alleviate tension headaches! It works!
So enjoy those yummy candy canes while you relax and rejuvenate with a warm bath with peppermint oil.
