A Few Ways You Can Shed That Stress

by Samantha Johnson

According to an American Psychological Association, 54 percent of Americans are concerned about the level of stress in their everyday lives.

Sixty-two percent say work has a significant impact on stress levels and 73 percent name money as the No. 1 factor that affects their stress level.

Although stress-reducing tactics vary by personality type, here are a few to consider.

1. Laugh.

Have you ever felt "cleansed" after a good laugh? Laughter is a powerful emotional and physical release. Research has shown that laughing can strengthen the immune system, reduce food cravings, and increase your threshold for pain. So, check out that comedy you’ve been meaning to see.

2. Exercise is a very effective stress reliever for many reasons.

First, it provides the distraction you need to take your mind off life’s frustrations. It decreases the stress hormone cortisol and increases endorphins (the feel-good hormones). And group classes or outdoor adventures with friends are great for social networking.

3. Don’t be afraid of that yoga class!

Although yoga has gained tremendous popularity over the past 10 years, many still imagine a group of people sitting in prayer position, chanting. This can’t be further from the truth. For instance, a gentle Hatha yoga session involves simple stretching and manageable positions. Yoga reduces stress, lowers blood pressure, reduces anxiety and teaches us controlled breathing.

4. Get a massage.

We cannot deny the powerful benefits of bodywork. Massage decreases anxiety, enhances your sleep quality, increases circulation, reduces fatigue, and increases immunity by stimulating lymph flow — your body’s natural defense system. Massage also offers vital emotional balance.

5. Explore a hobby.

Hobbies such as gardening, decorating, woodworking and painting will allow your mind to become a catalyst for creativity. By focusing on your hobby, you create the diversion that can lesson everyday pressures.
