Winterize Your Skin
We all know that being battered by the harsh, brutal winds of winter can wreak havoc on your skin—robbing it of critical moisture. Dry skin can cause an array of problems— from itchiness and irritation, to wrinkles, cracked cuticles and even eczema.
But it’s not just outdoor winter air that causes the damage. The effects of indoor heating systems can be just as dehydrating for your skin!
Here are a few simple steps that can help:
- Cool down the shower: One of the most common mistakes that we make in winter is using hot water in our showers or baths. Prolonged exposure to hot water can rob your body its natural oil. Cool the temperature to lukewarm and limited your shower to 4-5 minutes.
- Exfoliate: While bathing, use a gentle scrub or loofa mitt. This removes the superficial layer of dry flaking skin while reducing fine lines and wrinkles and approving its overall appearance. Your local spa or bath shops can recommend the best products.
- Moisturize: Moisturizing daily will help stop skin from drying or cracking. Creams—in adverse to lotions—are much more effective this time of year. Stay away from creams that contain perfumes or lanolin, which can do more damage than good. A pure ayurdedic oil is the best option. Apply 2- 3 minutes after a shower or bath to help seal in moisture.
- Cover up: Be sure to cover exposed skin before going outside. This will protect it from the cold temperatures and dry air.
- Control indoor conditions: In winter, dryness is a major enemy. Adding moisture back into the air with a humidifier and keeping temperatures at a moderate level, will bring balance back into your home. Also adding plants or pans of water to radiators will help.
- Stay hydrated: Keep your body hydrated from the inside out is key. Experts recommend at least eight 8 glasses of water each day.
And, if skin irritations continue or worsen check with your doctor for treatment.
