A modern version of a centuries-old meditative therapy was re-born in August 2003 when the 50,000-square-foot Spa at Stoweflake debuted its classical, seven-circuit labyrinth, offering guests a serene and relaxing outdoor sanctuary for peaceful reflection and stress relief.
The Spa at Stoweflake labyrinth is a winding, natural pathway composed of flowered hedgerows and other flora that, when walked, provides a meditative experience that reduces stress, renews energy levels and creates inner balance within the walker. Unlike a maze, a labyrinth has no dead end and is meant to relax rather than confuse. Instead, a labyrinth combines the imagery of the circle and the spiral into a meandering but purposeful path. Walkers simply follow the path to the center and walk out again in a manner that slows them down and centers them. Walking a labyrinth is a right brain task involving intuition, creativity and imagery and its origins in spiritual and ritual traditions can be traced back as far as 1230 B.C.
Stoweflake’s extensive labyrinth is designed by Dr. Patrick MacManaway, a holistic therapist, dowser and practitioner of geomancy – the art of discerning creatively relating to the Spirit of Peace. Dr. MacManaway, president of the British Society of Dowsers, is the author of “Dowsing For Health" (Lorenz 2002) and has a degree in medicine from the University of Edinburgh.
The Stoweflake Mountain Resort & Spa, set amidst the inspiring Green Mountains of Stowe, Vermont, is a AAA Four Diamond, family owned and operated resort. Upon its opening, the Spa at Stoweflake established Stoweflake as one the country’s premier spa resort destinations.
