CHRONOLOGY

1948 Native Vermonter, Stuart Baraw, Sr. and his wife, Beatrice, purchase three acres of pasture from the Gale Farm on the Mountain Road.  Stu had skied in Stowe since the 1930's.

1949 Stu and Bea build a small cottage for weekend ski trips.  Their three children, Stuart, Jr., Chuck, and Donna learn to ski in Stowe.

1950's The Baraws build a series of additions onto the cottage and add bunk beds to make room for family, friends, and other ski enthusiasts.

1963 The Baraws move to Stowe permanently.  Stu's job as vice-president of sales for Process Engineering keeps him on the road during the week.  The Baraws build a large, two-story residence with extra rooms for Bea to rent.  The new building consists of 20 guest rooms, a dining room, cocktail lounge, lobby with fireplace, and an apartment for Stu and Bea.  Stu, Jr., and his wife, Marion, help Bea run the business.  Marion coins the term "Stoweflake" and the lodge opens.

1964 16 motel units and an outdoor pool are built on the original three acres.

1969  The Baraws purchase neighboring motel, the Nordic Motor Inn.  Chuck manages the new property.  Tennis courts, chip and pitch course, and a poolside cabana are added for summer business.

1977 The Baraws purchase Mountain Associates Realtors.  Stu, Jr. becomes manager.  Chuck promoted to General Manager of the Stoweflake-Nordic.

1981 The Baraws combine the two inns into one resort with an enclosed link and add a new central office and lobby.  A new restaurant and pub (The Rib Room) are built.  New main entrance is constructed and the resort officially takes the name of Stoweflake Resort.  Construction of six of 12 three-bedroom townhouses begins.  Sold as condominiums in 1982.

1984 Original Stoweflake completely renovated and upgraded to deluxe rooms.  Second six condominiums built and sold. 

1985  First phase of Conference and Meeting Center built.  10 deluxe rooms added along with a health club, indoor pool, and Jacuzzi. 

1986 The Rib Room and Pub are completely renovated.  The Rib Room becomes an elegant restaurant, Winfield's, named after Stuart Winfield Baraw.  The pub is renamed Charlie B's Pub and Wine Bar, after Charles H. Baraw.

1988 Chuck Baraw receives "Innkeeper of the Year" Award from Vermont Lodging and Restaurant Association.

1990 1800 square foot Atrium reception area opens along with The Beatrice Room, an executive boardroom.  Stoweflake positioned to become one of New England's most professional conference and meeting facilities.  Front entry, lobby, offices, and grounds upgraded.  Professional golf practice area opened.

1992 Co-founder, Stu Baraw, dies.

1995    Main Inn Wing renovated and decorated in Laura Ashley country style.  High-tech HVAC system wins the 1995 Marvin Award for Excellence in Design Project.  Charlie B's Pub and Restaurant doubles in size.  Winfield's Bistro is completely renovated

1998 Most extensive renovation in the Stoweflake's history is completed.  New East Wing is dedicated to founders, Stuart and Beatrice Baraw.  East Wing replaces original Stoweflake building, adding 40 luxury rooms and suites, a 4,500 square foot conference room/ballroom, state-of-the-art Spa & Sports Club, and Stowe's only racquetball/squash court.  The East Wing is connected with the Main Building and West Wing, resulting in 96 rooms under one roof.  The resort is re-named the Stoweflake Mountain Resort & Spa.

2000 Completion of 6 of 12 one, two and three bedroom luxury townhouses as part of The Meadows complete with custom features, fireplaces and decks.  New area also includes a private pond and new home for founder, Bea Baraw.

2001 Co-founder, Bea Baraw, dies

2003 Celebrating 40 years with the opening of the Spa at Stoweflake, which will establish Stoweflake Mountain Resort & Spa as one of the premier spa destination resorts in the country and the largest and most exclusive in Vermont.
